Beamshot comparison, January 2012
This time I have compared 3 different sizes of lights: Four large, 6 with 2x18650 and 3 with 1x18650 batteries. This might not be completely fair, but it is interesting to see how different beamprofile affects the beam. A high output light does necessary throw as far as a lower output light.
I have included the following lights (Same sequence as picture): Xtar S1, NiteCore TM11, Fenix TK70, Olight SR92, Fenix TK35, Balder BD4, NiWalker NW750, JetBeam BC40, ThruNite TN11, ThruNite Catapult V2 XM-L, Fenix TK21, ThruNite T30, NiWalker NW220.
Notes:
When possible I have used 18650 batteries.
On the Xtar S1 it is not possible to reliable select minimum brightness, what I call minimum here is only somewhere near the minimum.
The NiWalker lights are pre-production versions.
The TN11 was with 2x18650, it can also work with 1x18650.
This chart shows the total light output measured with a ceiling bounce. The 3xXM-L lights easily wins here and "surprisingly" the 1xXM-L light is only about 1/3 the output. The NW220 is totally outclassed here.
Comparing all the brightness settings shows some very differently solutions. The S1 and TN11 has a adjustable range. The TN11 and T30 has a moonlight mode. Lights like TM11, SR92, BC40 does not have any low modes and NW lights are single mode.
The lux measured at 4 meter, does also show wide variations. The TM11 high output lights, does not have more throw than the weak NW220, but then the throw on the NW220 is very good. Nothing can match the TK70, but it also has 3 large and deep reflectors and is a large light.
The large lights are rather heavy, except the TM11.
User interface: ESS: Electronic side switch, ETS:Electronic tail switch, TS: Tail switch, Head: Turning the head is used in the user interface.
I could not find any price on the pre-production lights and on the new S1. Notice that the SR92 does include a battery pack and charger.

Beam profile, high power, reduced exposure
The reduced exposure makes it easier to compare the hotspot.
